When I first started my photography business, I knew I needed to build a portfolio and gain experience quickly — not just for myself, but to show potential clients what I could really offer. That’s where mini sessions came in. They were short, affordable, and the perfect way to fill my calendar while capturing a wide range of people and moments. It was definitely a hustle, but it worked. I was able to connect with families, couples, and individuals, and little by little, I began to find my groove and my voice behind the camera.

As time went on, I started to figure out what I really enjoyed. I realized I didn’t want to do everything, and honestly, I didn’t have to. I wanted to focus on the types of sessions that truly made me feel inspired and fulfilled. Today, I specialize in weddings, boudoir, and lifestyle sessions — each one rooted in emotion, connection, and storytelling. I love being able to capture the big moments and the quiet ones, and helping people see how beautiful and powerful their stories really are.

That said, I still enjoy taking on a few other types of sessions when they align with what I love — like senior portraits, sports photography, and milestone moments for families. These sessions help keep things creatively fresh and fun for me. Lately, I’ve been really inspired by those bold, dramatic senior/sports portraits with intense lighting, vibrant colors, and full-blown media day energy. It’s a style I’d love to explore more deeply in the future… but that’s a blog post for another day.

Early on, I also made a conscious decision to set boundaries around the types of sessions I don’t offer. For example, I don’t do posed newborn photography. It’s just not where my heart is, and I’d much rather refer people to photographers in our area who absolutely shine in that space. We’re lucky to have so much talent nearby, and I love being able to support others in the industry while still staying true to my own strengths and style.

So how do I attract the clients I love working with? Honestly, it comes down to using my marketing background, my personality, and a deep understanding of what makes my brand unique. I show up with honesty, humor, and heart — and I think people connect with that. My location doesn’t hurt either. I’m based right between Bismarck and Minot, with Lake Sakakawea just a few minutes away. It’s a beautiful and convenient spot that draws in people from all directions, and I’m so grateful to be able to serve a variety of communities from right where I live.

At the end of the day, finding your people isn’t about trying to be everything for everyone. It’s about focusing in, knowing what lights you up, and creating a space where your ideal clients feel seen, valued, and celebrated. That’s what I’ve built my business on — and I’m still learning and growing as I go.

Thanks for following along. Whether you’re a photographer, a client, or just curious about the journey, I’m so glad you’re here.
